It's Germany fault. First they declared war to French without any valid reason other than they didn't want to fight on two fronts. Then they invaded Belgium to make sure their plan worked. It didn't, but that's another story. Of course Britain could be blamed too if for small portion of it. They use their "piece of paper" to declare war against Germany, which turned what should be a few month of war ended with France surrender (cough) and Russia knocked out, into four years of ordeal. Britain needed to pull Germany a few pegs down, but that's also another story.

There was only two ways the Germans had any chance to beat the USSR. Either Stalin had to chicken out and surrender in the first month. The other would be if the Germans played more into the liberator role and invited more of the men in Ukraine and other smaller states that the USSR had incorporated into their empire. But even if that second possibility happened- it would still have depended on Stalin deciding to fight or not. As soon as Stalin decided to fight, the war was won. There was zero chance of the Germans overcoming the numbers of men, the amount of resources, the vast distances, and the extreme elements.

For those of you that hold it against the French Army for what happened during the Second World War.......you need to study the First World War. The French Army fought harder, for longer, and suffered more atrocious conditions than about anybody else in World History ever has. They proved their mettle as fighting men more thoroughly than any other nation has ever had to, and they won. It's not hard to understand why they wouldn't want to go through that horror again, as a nation. It's such a shame that the heroes of Verdun and the Marne have been so overshadowed by the surrender in 1940.

Do you really think that the US just stumbled into being the global hegemon and the most powerful country in the world by accident? US planned and orchestrated world war one but it wasn’t 100% successful. Although they did succeed in greatly weakening Europe and had their sights set on taking over from Britton. As soon as the war was over, they were planning on World War II which finally succeeded. France, Germany, Italy, Britton, Japan and the Soviet Union were severely weakened allowing the US to become a super power and have the reserve currency. Ever since then, the US makes sure that no other country becomes a military or economic superpower including its own allies. It does not allow any peer competitors.

Germany could have never won. Once they invaded Poland it was over. Now... they could have asked Poland for transit rights... which any sane country would deny... or lull them into an alliance...
